Speech delivered by Mr. Steve Donovan, IKF Vice President

The resurgence of cultural and historical enthusiasm of kiting events within China ( PRC )

Mr President, fellow Vice Presidents, IKF Executive, members of the IKF sub committee.

It is with a great amount of appreciation, and thanks for the consideration to my various words of advice in the past. That I write to highlight, the great achievements of the IKF, in the past few years especially. Regarding organizing, and preferable site location for major staged events. As a member of the IKF executive, going on 10 years now, in various capacities. I have been privileged to travel to many regions of China, and witness the many changes and improvements. Which have also created a resounding resurgence in the traditional family activity of kite flying together, within the sport of kiting in general. I would personally wish to thank The IKF President Mr Feng, for his consideration to most of my recommendations previously. This in itself, working with such proactive, and influential people within the PRC government. Has allowed the IKF, to promote an activity with all origins beginning in China.

There a few “ who claim this could be elsewhere, apparently. “ Though for me, and many others with vast expertise, and experience. “ The genuine origin of the kite in world history, is and will always be China. “ The historical, and cultural link to the first kite made by MoeTze, and Liu Ban, cannot ever be refuted. Especially, by the likes of the sooth sayers, of no credible alterior substantiation.

In mentioning this, I am very delighted to see the smiles on the many children’s faces. When encouraged to fly kites for the first time. I am certain this first experience will last a lifetime. With such events within China, staged more regularly in various provinces for the masses to attend now.

This has taken a lot of hard work, and organising by many people behind the scenes. Obviously the financial support from both the PRC government, Provincial, and Local governments. To ensure such events are truly enjoyed by all in attendance. This shows that flying kites, and the message of what kite flying is all about will continue, with future generations. This makes me very happy, and knowing this historical and cultural link to the origin of the kite. Will always be acknowledged, as beginning in China.

Especially the first kite design, and the relevant defensive application. It wasn’t until many centuries later anywhere else in the world this was even to be considered.

Steve Donovan
